May Reads

Hi guys, Happy June!

Is it just me, or does time fly once the weather warms up and everyone’s calendar fills up fast? Between all the plans and sunshine, this post is coming a little later than usual, but we’re finally getting to it!

As for my reading in May, I’d call it a pretty average month. Not every book was a hit, but there were definitely a couple I’d recommend.

One Perfect Couple by Ruth Ware

The plot of One Perfect Couple felt like a blend of a corny reality TV show (which I’m an absolute sucker for) and Survivor. It’s gotten some mixed reviews—some found it insufferable, while others really enjoyed it. Personally, I liked it. While it wasn’t your typical twisty thriller that keeps you constantly guessing, I found it entertaining for what it was.

One Of The Girls by Lucy Clarke

After finishing the latest season of White Lotus, I was craving a book with a similar vibe—lots of drama set against a dreamy vacation backdrop. One of the Girls definitely delivered! It had all the dysfunction, drama, and destination chaos I was hoping for. This was so close to being a five-star read for me, but I knocked off one star for the ending. It wasn’t bad—I just wished it had been a bit more explosive, especially after how intense the rest of the book was.

The Housemaid is Watching by Freida McFadden

I’m usually a big fan of Freida’s books, especially the Housemaid series, but this one really fell short for me. It wasn’t a terrible read, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it either. The second half was a slight improvement over the first, but overall, it still left a lot to be desired.

Love, Mom by Iliana Xander

Love, Mom was hands down my favorite book this month! While it generally has high ratings, some of the negative reviews mention the writing style, possibly due to the letters woven into the narrative. Personally, I absolutely loved it. It’s one of those books where all your questions are answered, and you’re not left guessing about much of the plot, which I really appreciated.

The Wife Upstairs by Freida McFadden

Look, I think it’s time for me to take a break from Freida. Part of the reason for my 3-star rating is that this felt like a weaker version of Colleen Hoover’s Verity. The plot is strikingly similar, but the storytelling and especially the ending felt over-the-top and had me rolling my eyes. It’s not the worst book I’ve ever read, and it might land better if you haven’t read Verity, but personally, I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it.

As always, if you’ve read any of these, I would love to hear your thoughts and if you have any great books you’ve been reading, I would love recommendations to add to my TBR list.

Stay hungry my friends!
